He came to us with hope,
But he was too badly broken.
His eyes; pleading, resigned.
He does not struggle.
He knows.
He shouldn’t have to see,
As he is wrapped in a soft cloth.
This should not be.
The invisible gas enters.
His hope is gone.
He is at peace.

Poor Swainson's hawk you mourn. But he was treated gently and didn't suffer after he came to you. It is a blessing he slipped away peacefully, poor beautiful bird. But I am sorry to hear it.
